I’ve just had a bit of R&R in New Caledonia sampling some of the excellent bonefish flats that they have on offer – without a doubt some of the best in the world, particularly if you’re looking for big bonefish.

Gunter Feuerstien from Switzerland came on a charter as soon as I returned to Hervey Bay, and he experienced some great pelagic action in the bay, landing his first Mack Tuna, which was quickly followed by plenty more of these chunky speedsters. These fish are still feeding on small baitfish, but are much more willing to take larger flies than they have been in previous weeks.

There are also some quality threadfin salmon around at the moment, for anyone interested in having a shot at metre plus threadies, now’s the time to do it. They should be around in numbers right through until February /March. Call me if you’re interested in a piece of this action!

On the freshwater scene, the bass are still active, with plenty of top water action for those willing to make an early start. Just on sunrise is the prime time to kick off, and if it’s a cloudy or overcast day the bite can go right through until mid morning or even midday.

The barra are starting to fire in Monduran as well, don’t forget it’s closed season in the saltwater until 1st February 2017.

The fishing will only continue to improve now with the water temps in the bay are up around 26c – I’m looking forward to plenty of action over the next few months!
